Swedish and Iraqi Chambers of Commerce Meet and Agree to Cooperate

Two-day Workshop with a Keynote Speech by the Swedish Trade Minister

Erbil, Iraq 16 & 17 April 2012

1.      The Private Sector Development Centre (PSDC) in Iraq hosted a successful workshop that the World Bank has organized with the support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).

2.      In addition to representatives from the Private Sector Development Centre, the World Bank’s Private Sector Development specialists in Iraq and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency; several Iraqi Chambers of Commerce attended the Workshop starting from Basra in the south up to Duhok in the north and met with representatives from Chambers of Commerce in Sweden including the President of Chamber of Trade Sweden.

3.      Issues that were tackled included “The Role of Business Associations”, “Policy Advocacy” and “Women Entrepreneurship & Empowerment” .

4.      The Minister of Trade of Sweden, H.E. Dr. Ewa Bjorling delivered a speech on investment opportunities in Iraq in the second day of the Workshop, and expressed high expectations for more bilateral investment and economic cooperation between Sweden and Iraq.

5.      The representative of the Iraqi private sector exchanged viewpoints and experiences with their Swedish counterparts, and expressed wishes for more cooperation.

6.      This is a very important milestone towards improving the bilateral commercial relationship between Iraq and Sweden and is a first step in building the capacity of Iraqi Chambers of Commerce and effectively developing the Iraqi Private Sector.
